Our Valuable Coral Reefs booklet ages 3+
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth.
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs support more species per unit area than any other marine environment, including about 4,000 species of fish, 800 species of hard corals and hundreds of other species. Scientists estimate that there may be millions of undiscovered species of organisms living in and around reefs.
Coral reefs have many different bright colors. The color will vary depending on their proteins, but you can find coral reefs in colors like red, blue, green, and purple. When swimming, you will notice their bright colors very quickly. Beyond their colors, lets talk about what they actually are. Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems, you can think of them as rain forests of the seas.
You can find plenty of creatures on a Coral Reef, including creatures such as sponges, mollusks, fish, worms, and much more. These creatures like to stay on or near Coral Reefs. This is because Coral Reefs supply shelter during the day, and make great hunting grounds at night. While they are found in less than 0.1 % of the worlds ocean area, Coral reefs have at least 25% of all marine species. Coral reefs also help the ocean by maintaining it’s carbon level. They act as a water filtration unit.
