Lions are the Kings of the jungle because of their raw power and strength. Lions fear no other animals, however, like a king, lions do have enemies. The lion is in danger of poachers, and because of poachers, the lion is an endangered species. If you have seen these majestic creatures at your local zoo, you can see why Lions get so much attention.
Lions (male and female) are afraid of large mammals like giraffes, hippos and elephants, but they are also afraid of their day-to-day prey. Every time a hunt takes place, their prey are going to try their best to resist. Fear of humans is now a key factor that drives lion behavior, studies find.
Male lions are much bigger than females and they have large manes, or hair, which covers their head and neck and stretches underneath to their belly. Lion cubs have light spots on their fur when they are born. These fade when they grow up and they help camouflage, or hide, them when they’re young.
Lions are currently listed as “Vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In West Africa, the species is now classified as “Critically Endangered”. Any further rapid reclines may see lions listed as “Endangered” across their range.
Protect wildlife habitats. Habitat loss is one of the biggest causes of extinction. Educate others. People are more likely to want to save animals if they know about them. Stay away from pesticides and herbicides. Shop ethically. Be an ethical tourist.
